Common FAQs

Yes. The University of Virginia (UVA) offers a Student Health Insurance Plan administered through Aetna. All full-time students charged the comprehensive fee are required to have health insurance. Students must either enroll in the UVA plan or provide proof of comparable coverage by the university’s deadlines. Student Medicover is an affordable alternative for international students and meets UVA’s waiver requirements.

The University of Virginia is located in Charlottesville, Virginia. UVA’s campus—commonly called “the Grounds”—straddles the border between the City of Charlottesville and Albemarle County. The historic campus includes Jefferson’s Rotunda and the Lawn and is surrounded by rolling hills and mountains.

For the 2026-2027 academic year, students assigned a “to-do” for insurance verification in the Student Information System must complete the process between July 15 and August 31. If you miss this deadline, you will remain enrolled in the UVA Student Health Plan for the entire year.

If you fail to submit a waiver by August 31, UVA will finalize your enrollment in the Student Health Plan and post the annual premium to your student account. Once the premium is posted, it becomes non-refundable and you will be required to keep the plan for the remainder of the academic year. Appeals for denied waivers must be filed by September 7.

Student Medicover’s UnitedHealthcare Choice Plus network includes major hospitals in Charlottesville. The University of Virginia Medical Center, located at 1215 Lee Street in Charlottesville, provides state-of-the-art inpatient and outpatient care. Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital, also in Charlottesville, is a 176-bed facility offering specialized services in cancer, cardiology, orthopedics and maternity. Both hospitals are within a short drive of campus and provide a full range of medical services.

Student Medicover generally offers lower premiums and flexible plan options compared with the UVA Student Health Plan. The Choice Plus network provides access to providers nationwide, while the university plan focuses on regional coverage. Student Medicover includes added benefits like vision coverage, telemedicine and mental-health counseling. Both plans cover essential services such as hospital stays, office visits and prescriptions.

Yes. Student Medicover offers optional coverage for spouses and children who live with you in the U.S. You can enroll dependents during your initial enrollment or within 30 days of a qualifying life event.

You can continue seeing your doctor if they are in the UnitedHealthcare Choice Plus network. Use Student Medicover’s provider lookup tool to check network participation. Out-of-network visits are reimbursed at a lower rate, so confirm your provider’s status before scheduling appointments.

UVA’s student plan provides comprehensive coverage but may have higher premiums and deductibles. Student Medicover offers plans specifically for F-1, J-1 and OPT students, often at lower cost with $0 deductible options and added benefits such as vision coverage and telehealth. Student Medicover partners with UnitedHealthcare’s Choice Plus network, giving access to a nationwide network of providers. Both plans satisfy UVA’s insurance requirement.

Yes. UVA automatically bills students for its health plan. If you enroll in Student Medicover and want to opt out of the university plan, you must submit proof of comparable coverage through the Haylor waiver portal during the insurance verification period.

According to the UVA waiver guide, students should visit Haylor’s website (haylor.com/uva) and select Student Waive/Enroll. Log in or create an account, enter your Student Medicover policy information and upload your insurance card. Waivers must be submitted each academic year during the open waiver period.

Yes. Student Medicover plans are available to international students and scholars with valid F-1, J-1 or OPT visas who attend UVA. Domestic students should remain on the UVA plan or another U.S. health insurance policy.

UVA’s waiver guide states that your insurance must be fully compliant with the Affordable Care Act, underwritten and administered in the United States, effective for the entire academic year and provide in-network non-emergent and routine care within a 75-mile radius of Charlottesville. It must cover hospital stays, doctor visits, mental health services and prescription drugs. Plans such as out-of-state Medicaid, international travel insurance and health-share plans do not qualify. Student Medicover meets UVA’s requirements.

After enrolling with Student Medicover, a digital ID card will be emailed to you. You can also download it from your Student Medicover account. When completing the UVA waiver, you will need to upload your ID card as proof of coverage.

In-network providers usually bill UnitedHealthcare directly. If you pay out-of-pocket, submit a completed claim form with itemized receipts via the Student Medicover portal or by mail. Claims are typically processed within a few weeks.

If you have questions about enrollment, claims or the UVA waiver process, call Student Medicover at 1-812-360-2313 or email [email protected]. Our support team can provide assistance in several languages.
