Common FAQs
Yes. All Harvard students are automatically enrolled in the Harvard University Student Health Program (HUSHP), which includes the Student Health Insurance Plan. This comprehensive plan provides medical, mental-health and prescription-drug coverage, but students with comparable insurance may waive it. Student Medicover provides alternative plans for international students that often cost less while still meeting Harvard’s waiver criteria.
Harvard University is in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Harvard Yard—the oldest and most prominent part of the campus—is a 22-acre green space bounded by Massachusetts Avenue, Cambridge Street, Broadway and Quincy Street. Harvard’s campus traverses the Charles River from the heart of Cambridge into nearby Allston, and first-year students live and study around Harvard Yard. The university also operates a medical campus in Boston’s Longwood Medical Area.
For the 2026 fall term, Harvard’s waiver application opens in the spring and must be submitted by July 31. Late waivers are accepted through September 30 but may incur a late fee. Waivers must be renewed each academic year, so be sure to complete the process before the deadline to avoid automatic enrollment.
If you miss the waiver deadline, Harvard will keep you enrolled in its Student Health Insurance Plan for the entire academic year and charge the full premium. Late waivers are only accepted until September 30 (with a fee), and no waivers are granted after that date. To avoid unwanted charges, make sure to complete your waiver before July 31.
Student Medicover’s UnitedHealthcare Choice Plus network includes many Boston-area hospitals, such as:
These hospitals appear on Harvard’s list of nearby hospitals and clinics and participate in UnitedHealthcare’s network, allowing Student Medicover members to access care conveniently.
Harvard’s Student Health Insurance Plan offers extensive coverage through Harvard University Health Services and partner hospitals but is relatively expensive. Student Medicover provides comparable benefits at a lower cost and uses the UnitedHealthcare Choice Plus network, giving students access to providers nationwide. Student Medicover also includes telemedicine, mental-health counseling and vision benefits and allows more flexibility in choosing providers off campus.
Yes. Student Medicover offers plans that allow you to add eligible dependents (spouse and children). You can select dependent coverage during the enrollment process, and premiums will vary based on the number of dependents and coverage level.
Student Medicover plans use the UnitedHealthcare Choice Plus network. If your current doctor participates in this network, you can continue seeing them at in-network rates. If not, you may need to choose a new provider or pay out-of-network costs. Use the provider search tool on UnitedHealthcare’s website to check whether your doctor is in network.
Harvard’s plan offers extensive coverage through the university and local hospitals but tends to be expensive. Student Medicover plans are designed for international students and typically provide lower premiums with comparable benefits. They use the UnitedHealthcare Choice Plus network, giving students access to a broad network of doctors nationwide. Student Medicover also includes telemedicine, mental-health counseling and vision discounts, providing flexibility beyond campus-based care.
Yes. All students are automatically enrolled in Harvard’s Student Health Insurance Plan. If you have a comparable U.S.-based plan such as Student Medicover, you may waive Harvard’s plan through the Student Insurance Portal. Without an approved waiver, the university will keep you enrolled and charge the insurance premium.
Harvard’s waiver is completed online. Log into the Student Insurance Portal using your Harvard Key, select Waive Coverage, choose Student Health Insurance Plan, and follow the prompts to enter your alternate insurance information. You may need to upload proof of coverage (front and back of your insurance ID card). If your insurance changes during the year, use the same portal to update your information. For questions, contact Member Services at 617-495-2008 or email [email protected].
Student Medicover plans are available to international students (F-1 and J-1) and others who need an affordable, comprehensive insurance option. If you are enrolled at Harvard and your Student Medicover plan meets Harvard’s waiver requirements (U.S.-based, comparable coverage and active for the full term), you can use it to waive Harvard’s health plan.
To waive Harvard’s plan, your alternate insurance must be U.S.-based and provide comparable coverage for the entire term. It should include hospital, physician, mental-health and prescription benefits and cover services in Massachusetts. Student Medicover plans meet these requirements. You must keep your coverage active while you are enrolled at Harvard; if your coverage changes, you must update the waiver information promptly.
After you enroll in Student Medicover, you will receive an email with instructions to set up an online account. From there, you can download your digital insurance ID card or request a physical card. Keep your card handy when you visit a doctor or pharmacy. If you have trouble accessing your card, contact Student Medicover support for help.
To file a claim, log into your Student Medicover account and submit the claim form along with itemized bills and receipts. Claims are processed by UnitedHealthcare, and reimbursements are typically issued within a few weeks. You can also call Student Medicover’s claims department for assistance with complex claims.
For questions about enrollment, waivers or claims, contact Student Medicover’s customer service team at [email protected] or by calling 1-812-360-2313. Live chat and a help center are also available on the Student Medicover website.
