Common FAQs

Yes. USF requires international students to have adequate health insurance. Students must either enroll in the USF Student Health Insurance Plan or complete a waiver showing proof of comparable coverage.

The University of South Florida’s main campus is in Tampa, Florida. It occupies more than 1,500 acres with about 240 buildings and borders an additional 735 acres of forest preserve and riverfront recreation area. The campus is easily accessible from downtown Tampa and provides a blend of academic facilities and natural spaces.

The waiver period runs July 15 through August 23. Students must submit all required documents to Academic Health Plans. Missing the deadline results in automatic enrollment in the USF plan.

Students who do not complete the waiver process by the deadline are automatically enrolled in the USF Student Health Insurance Plan and charged the premium for the term.

Tampa General Hospital (TGH) is a 1,040-bed non-profit tertiary research and academic medical center located on Davis Island in Tampa. It serves as the primary teaching affiliate of the USF Morsani College of Medicine and houses the area’s only Level I adult and pediatric trauma center. Student Medicover’s UnitedHealthcare Choice Plus network includes providers at TGH and other Tampa-area hospitals.

After you enroll in Student Medicover, you will receive an email with instructions to set up your UHCSR HealthSafe ID. From there, you can download your digital insurance ID card or request a physical card. Keep your card handy when you visit a doctor or pharmacy. If you have trouble accessing your card, contact Student Medicover for support.

When receiving care from an in-network provider, simply share your insurance ID card with the provider so that the claim will be filed on your behalf by the provider. To file a claim yourself, log into your United Healthcare Student Resources account and submit the claim form along with itemized bills and receipts. Claims are processed by UnitedHealthcare Student Resources, and reimbursements are typically issued within a few weeks. You can also contact our support team for assistance with claims and billing.

For questions about enrollment, waivers or claims, contact Student Medicover’s customer service team at [email protected] or by calling 1-812-360-2313. Live chat and a help center are also available on the Student Medicover website.

The USF Student Health Insurance Plan is designed for both domestic and international students but can be expensive. Student Medicover plans are designed for international students and typically provide lower premiums with comparable benefits. Student Medicover plans use the UnitedHealthcare Choice Plus network, giving students access to a broad network of doctors nationwide. Student Medicover also includes telemedicine, mental health counseling and vision discounts, providing flexibility beyond campus-based care.

Yes. If you have a comparable insurance plan such as Student Medicover, you may waive the school’s plan. Without an approved waiver, the university will keep you enrolled and charge the insurance premium.

Students must submit all required documents to Academic Health Plans.

Student Medicover offers plans specifically for international students (F-1 and J-1 visa holders) studying in the United States. If you are an international student at USF, you can enroll in a Student Medicover plan and use it to waive the school’s insurance plan.

Your plan must be active for the entire academic year and provide comprehensive medical coverage, including preventive care, physician visits, hospitalization, prescription drugs and mental-health services. Student Medicover plans meet all requirements set by USF.

Yes. Student Medicover offers plans that allow you to add eligible dependents (spouse and children). You can select dependent coverage during the enrollment process, and premiums will vary based on the number of dependents and coverage levels.

Student Medicover plans use the UnitedHealthcare Choice Plus network. If your current doctor participates in this network, you can continue seeing them at in-network rates. If not, you may need to choose a new provider or pay out-of-network costs. Use the provider search tool on UnitedHealthcare’s website to check whether your doctor is in network.
