Common FAQs
Yes. Emory University requires all students, including international students, to have health insurance. Those who do not have comparable coverage are automatically enrolled in the Emory University Student Health Insurance Plan (EUSHIP) and billed for the premium. Student Medicover offers alternative plans for international students that often cost less while still meeting Emory’s waiver criteria.
Emory University’s main campus is in Druid Hills, an Atlanta neighborhood about four miles (six kilometers) east of downtown. The campus spans several hundred acres and is adjacent to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Emory also operates hospitals and research facilities throughout the Atlanta area.
For the 2026–27 academic year, waiver applications open on June 8 and must be submitted by August 14. Late admits should complete the waiver as soon as they gain access to the waiver site. Emory’s FAQ notes that the waiver site typically opens in June and closes at 5:00 pm on August 1 each year, and every student must complete the process annually to avoid charges.
If your waiver is not submitted and accepted by the deadline, you will be charged for EUSHIP and must remain on the plan for the entire semester. Appeals for late waivers are considered case-by-case, but approval is not guaranteed. Be sure to complete the waiver each year to avoid unwanted charges.
Student Medicover’s UnitedHealthcare Choice Plus network includes major Atlanta hospitals such as:
Because Student Medicover partners with UnitedHealthcare, you can access these hospitals and many other providers nationwide.
EUSHIP provides comprehensive coverage through Aetna Student Health but is relatively expensive. Student Medicover offers lower-cost plans tailored for international students. It partners with UnitedHealthcare’s Choice Plus network, allowing access to a wide array of hospitals and physicians nationwide and including telemedicine, mental-health counseling and vision benefits. Emory’s plan restricts students to Aetna’s network and requires referrals for some services, whereas Student Medicover offers greater flexibility and may save students thousands of dollars each year.
Yes. Student Medicover offers dependent coverage for spouses and children. You can add dependents during the enrollment process, and premiums will vary based on the number of dependents and coverage level.
Student Medicover plans use UnitedHealthcare’s Choice Plus network. If your current physician is part of this network, you can continue to see them at in-network rates. If not, you can search for an in-network provider in Atlanta using the UnitedHealthcare directory. Visiting out-of-network providers may result in higher costs or non-covered services.
EUSHIP, administered by Aetna, provides comprehensive medical and mental-health benefits but can be expensive. Student Medicover offers plans tailored to international students with lower premiums and comparable benefits. Student Medicover uses UnitedHealthcare’s Choice Plus network, giving students nationwide access to hospitals and physicians, and includes telemedicine, mental-health counseling and vision benefits.
Yes. Emory automatically enrolls students in EUSHIP. To use another plan, you must submit an insurance waiver through your OPUS student portal. Without an approved waiver, you will remain enrolled in EUSHIP and be charged the full premium.
To waive EUSHIP, complete the two-step process described in Emory’s insurance FAQ. First, log into your OPUS account and access the student insurance requirement waiver site, which opens in June and closes at 5:00 pm on August 1. Select the academic year, read the waiver conditions and agree. Second, upload a photocopy of your insurance ID card to the student health portal. Your plan must meet Emory’s waiver criteria, including prescription drug coverage, 100% coverage for preventive care in Atlanta, coverage for inpatient and outpatient medical and mental-health care, and at least 75 % of usual and customary charges. You can re-enter the OPUS waiver site before the deadline to correct mistakes.
Student Medicover plans are available to international students (F-1 and J-1) and others who need affordable coverage. If your plan meets Emory’s waiver criteria—prescription drug coverage, 100% preventive care, comprehensive inpatient and outpatient medical and mental-health care in Atlanta, at least 75 % of usual and customary charges, and a U.S. claims administrator—you can use it to waive EUSHIP.
Emory’s waiver criteria require that your insurance provide prescription drug coverage, 100 % coverage for preventive care (including vaccinations) in Atlanta, inpatient and outpatient medical and mental-health care, and coverage of at least 75 % of usual and customary charges. The plan must be issued by a U.S.-based claims administrator and remain active for the full academic year. HMO or cost-sharing plans generally do not qualify. Student Medicover plans meet these requirements, making them suitable for waiving EUSHIP.
After enrolling in a Student Medicover plan, you will receive an email with instructions to create your online member account. Once registered, you can download your digital ID card or request a physical card. Present your card when visiting a doctor or pharmacy. If you need help accessing your card, contact Student Medicover support.
To file a claim, log into your Student Medicover account and submit the claim form along with itemized receipts and any explanation of benefits from your provider. Claims are processed by UnitedHealthcare, and reimbursements are usually issued within a few weeks. You can also call Student Medicover’s claims team for assistance.
