Common FAQs
Yes. The New School automatically enrolls eligible students in its Student Health Insurance Plan each academic year. Students who already have comparable coverage can waive the university plan by submitting proof of insurance. Student Medicover offers international students a more affordable alternative that still meets The New School’s waiver requirements.
The New School is located in New York City, in the heart of Greenwich Village in Manhattan. Studying in this vibrant neighborhood allows students to explore art, culture and city life every day.
For the 2026-2027 academic year, The New School’s online waiver form becomes available on April 28, 2026, and the fall waiver deadline is September 8. If you successfully waive in the fall, the waiver applies to both fall and spring terms; a new waiver is required each academic year.
If you do not submit a waiver by the deadline (September 8 for fall 2026), you will remain enrolled in The New School’s Student Health Insurance Plan for the academic year and be responsible for the full premium. Late waivers are not guaranteed and may not result in a full refund.
Student Medicover’s UnitedHealthcare Choice Plus network includes major hospitals near Greenwich Village. Lenox Health Greenwich Village (also known as Northwell Greenwich Village Hospital) provides comprehensive services and coordinates care with Lenox Hill Hospital and Manhattan Eye, Ear & Throat Hospital. These facilities are a short distance from campus and offer emergency, surgical, orthopedic and specialty care.
Student Medicover generally offers lower premiums and more flexible plan options than the university plan. The Choice Plus network provides nationwide access to physicians, whereas the university plan may have a narrower network. Student Medicover plans also include telemedicine, mental health support and vision benefits.
Yes. Student Medicover offers optional coverage for spouses and children who live with you in the United States. You can add dependents during your initial enrollment or within 30 days of a qualifying life event.
You can continue seeing your doctor if they participate in the UnitedHealthcare Choice Plus network. Check Student Medicover’s provider directory to confirm. You may still see out-of-network doctors, but your costs will be higher.
The New School’s plan is designed to serve a broad student population and may carry higher premiums. Student Medicover offers plans tailored for F-1, J-1 and OPT students with lower costs, low deductibles and added benefits such as vision coverage and telehealth. Both plans meet the university’s waiver criteria, but Student Medicover uses the nationwide UnitedHealthcare Choice Plus network, giving you access to more providers and hospitals.
Yes. The New School automatically bills students for its health plan. To use Student Medicover instead, you must submit a waiver through UniversityHealthPlans.com during the designated waiver period and provide proof of comparable coverage.
Visit UniversityHealthPlans.com and select The New School. Log in or create an account and access the waiver form. Enter your Student Medicover policy information, confirm that your insurance meets the university’s criteria and submit the form. According to the university, waiver requests must be submitted each year before the posted deadline. Late waivers may not be accepted or may result in only a partial refund.
Yes. Student Medicover is available to international students and scholars on F-1, J-1 and OPT visas who are studying at The New School. Domestic students should remain on the university’s plan or their own U.S. insurance.
To waive, your policy must be active for the entire academic year and provide comprehensive coverage for illness, injury, preventive care, mental health and prescriptions. It can be U.S.-based or an international plan that offers comparable benefits and does not limit coverage to emergencies. Student Medicover plans meet these requirements.
Once your enrollment is approved, Student Medicover will email you a digital ID card. You can also download it by logging in to your Student Medicover account. Use this card when you visit doctors or hospitals and upload it when submitting The New School’s waiver form.
In-network providers typically bill UnitedHealthcare directly. If you pay out-of-pocket, submit a claim form with itemized receipts via your Student Medicover account or by mail. Claims are usually processed in a few weeks.
For enrollment assistance, claims questions or help completing your waiver, call Student Medicover at 1-812-360-2313 or email [email protected]. Support is available in multiple languages.
