Common FAQs

Yes. New York University (NYU) automatically enrolls most students in the school-sponsored Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) unless they successfully waive coverage. This plan provides comprehensive medical and mental-health benefits, but the premiums can be expensive. Student Medicover offers affordable alternative plans designed for international students that use the UnitedHealthcare Choice Plus network.

NYU’s urban campus spans multiple neighborhoods in New York City. The primary campus is centered around Washington Square Park in Greenwich Village, Manhattan, and the university also operates a campus at MetroTech Center in Downtown Brooklyn. Students live and study in the heart of New York City, with housing, classrooms and student facilities spread across these areas.

NYU has three waiver deadlines each academic year. For the 2025-26 year, the fall waiver deadline is September 30 (2025), the spring deadline is February 10 (2026), and the summer deadline is June 5 (2026). You must submit your completed waiver by the appropriate deadline to avoid being charged for NYU’s health plan.

If you miss the waiver deadline or your waiver is denied, NYU will automatically keep you enrolled in its Student Health Insurance Plan for that semester. The premium charge will remain on your student account and cannot be removed retroactively. To avoid unwanted charges, be sure to complete and submit your waiver form before the appropriate deadline.

Student Medicover uses UnitedHealthcare’s Choice Plus network, which includes many hospitals in New York City. Near NYU’s campus you’ll find:

  • Tisch Hospital – an acute-care hospital with more than 352 beds located in midtown Manhattan.
  • Kimmel Pavilion – a 374-bed inpatient facility adjacent to Tisch Hospital that offers surgical and intensive-care services.
  • NYU Langone Orthopedic Hospital – a 225-bed specialty hospital located in the Gramercy Park neighborhood for orthopedic and musculoskeletal care.

Because Student Medicover partners with UnitedHealthcare, you can access these hospitals and a broad network of other providers nationwide.

The NYU Student Health Insurance Plan is a university-sponsored plan that includes access to NYU Langone Health facilities and comprehensive benefits, but it is relatively expensive. Student Medicover plans often cost less and provide comparable or better benefits, including telemedicine, mental-health counseling, vision discounts, and nationwide coverage through the UnitedHealthcare Choice Plus network. Unlike NYU’s plan, Student Medicover allows you to seek care at any in-network provider nationwide without referrals, making it a flexible option for international students.

Yes. Student Medicover offers dependent coverage options. During enrollment you can add your spouse or children to your plan. Premiums will vary based on the number of dependents and the level of coverage selected. Dependents will have access to the same UnitedHealthcare Choice Plus network and benefits as the primary insured.

Student Medicover plans use UnitedHealthcare’s Choice Plus network, which includes a large selection of doctors and specialists. If your doctor participates in this network, you can continue to see them at in-network rates. If not, you may still see your doctor, but out-of-network costs may be higher and may not count toward your waiver requirements. You can search for in-network providers using UnitedHealthcare’s online directory.

NYU’s SHIP is a robust plan administered through the university, but many students find it costly. Student Medicover is designed specifically for F-1 and J-1 students and often costs less. It partners with UnitedHealthcare’s Choice Plus network, giving you access to a nationwide network of hospitals and doctors. In contrast, NYU’s plan may restrict you to certain campus or NYU-affiliated providers. Student Medicover plans include telemedicine, mental-health counseling, vision discounts and worldwide coverage for emergencies, making them a flexible option for students seeking comprehensive benefits at a lower price.

Yes. NYU automatically enrolls you in its Student Health Insurance Plan. To use a different plan such as Student Medicover, you must submit a waiver showing proof of comparable coverage. Without an approved waiver, NYU will keep you enrolled in the university’s plan and bill the premium to your student account. Student Medicover plans meet NYU’s insurance requirements, so you can waive NYU’s plan once you have your alternative policy.

NYU requires you to complete a paper waiver form. According to the waiver guide, you should download the official NYU waiver form, fill out Section A with your personal information (name, NYU ID, date of birth and signature), and have your insurance company complete Section B to certify that your policy meets NYU’s minimum requirements. These requirements include unlimited coverage per accident or illness, inpatient and outpatient care in New York City (including mental health services), medical evacuation and repatriation, a deductible under $1,500 per year and no exclusions for pre-existing conditions. Once both sections are completed, email the signed form and supporting documentation to [email protected] by the deadline. After your waiver is reviewed and approved, the NYU insurance charge will be removed from your bill.

Student Medicover offers plans specifically for international students (F-1 and J-1 visa holders) studying in the United States. If you are an international student at NYU and your current coverage meets the university’s waiver requirements, you can purchase a Student Medicover plan and use it to waive NYU’s SHIP. Domestic students or those with employer-based plans may also consider Student Medicover, but they must ensure the plan meets NYU’s coverage criteria.

NYU requires alternate insurance plans to meet specific criteria. Your policy must provide unlimited coverage per accident or illness, include inpatient and outpatient care in New York City (including mental health care), cover medical evacuation and repatriation, have an annual deductible under $1,500, and have no exclusion for pre-existing conditions. Additionally, the plan must be issued by a U.S.-based carrier with a U.S. claims address and contact number. If your insurance meets these requirements, you can use it to waive NYU’s plan.

After enrolling in a Student Medicover plan, you will receive instructions by email to create an online account. Once you’ve registered, you can download and print your insurance ID card or request a physical card to be mailed to you. Keep this card with you when visiting doctors or pharmacies. If you have any trouble accessing your ID card, contact Student Medicover’s customer service for assistance.

To file a claim, log into your Student Medicover member portal and download the claim form. Complete the form and upload it along with itemized receipts or explanation of benefits from your provider. Claims are typically processed within a few weeks. For help, you can also call or email Student Medicover’s claims support team.

Student Medicover’s customer service team can assist with enrollment, waiver questions, claims and finding providers. You can reach them by email at [email protected] or call 1-812-360-2313. They also offer live chat on their website and a dedicated help center with FAQs and resources.
